Traditions & Guest FAQs

Everything you need to know about ceremonies, cultural customs, dress codes, and comfort.

Yes, absolutely and whole-heartedly! We warmly encourage all guests from all backgrounds to wear traditional South Indian clothing if they wish—such as vibrant Kanchipuram pure silk sarees for women and silk Veshtis (dhotis) with Angavastram or kurtas for men. We have expert saree drapists and dhoti stylists stationed at the hospitality desk to assist everyone. Alternatively, Western formal attire (suits, elegant dresses) is equally welcome. Our only small cultural note: please avoid solid black attire during the sacred morning Muhurtham ceremony.

The Nalangu is a light-hearted, joyful pre-wedding ceremony where families playfully break the ice—applying fragrant cooling Chandanam (sandalwood paste) and turmeric, rolling coconuts, and searching for the wedding ring hidden inside a bronze pot of milk and petals. The Oonjal is the auspicious swing ceremony: Ananya and Kabir sit together on an ornate wooden swing draped with fragrant jasmine while married women sing classical Carnatic Oonjal songs, ward off evil eyes, and feed them milk and banana for harmony and balance.

The Mangalya Dharanam is the sacred climax of a South Indian Hindu wedding. Kabir ties the sacred Thali (Mangalsutra) around Ananya’s neck with three knots (Moondru Mudichu), symbolizing devotion, family union, and lifelong companionship. At this exact moment, the Nadaswaram and Thavil percussionists unleash the electrifying, auspicious crescendo known as Kettimelam, while all guests shower yellow Akshata (turmeric-sanctified rice) and flower petals over the couple.

Served on freshly cut, clean plantain leaves, the Kalyana Virundhu is an elaborate multi-course feast celebrating ancient culinary heritage. Courses include warm paruppu (lentils) with pure ghee, sambar, rasam, avial, poriyal, appalam, curd, and hot elaneer payasam. It is traditionally savored using the fingers of the right hand. When you finish, fold your banana leaf top-to-bottom towards you as a traditional sign of deep culinary satisfaction and gratitude!

Yes! Children bring endless joy to a South Indian wedding. The bungalow grounds offer secure garden lawns, fresh tender coconut water stations, traditional sweet counters, and comfortable rest suites for families with young ones.

Late November is Chennai’s most pleasant and breezy season! Along the scenic East Coast Road, daytime temperatures hover comfortably around 25°C to 28°C (77°F to 82°F) with cool coastal breezes. Shaded verandahs and the open-to-sky courtyard keep the celebration naturally temperate and refreshing.
